Event Details

Although I live in the northeastern US coastal city of New York, my knowledge of the tides had been rather limited, only spurred by rare visits to beaches on Long Island. But my awareness of tides was greatly heightened during a 2017 artist residency in the town of St. Andrews in New Brunswick, Canada. There, I traveled almost daily across a sand bar to reach the adjacent Ministers Island, the access to which was entirely subject to the tidal schedule. Also, in St Andrews, I witnessed great amounts of seaweed that collected on the shore. I gathered examples of these and made a temporary wall installation in a former studio. After this residency experience, my interest in and respect for the tides, and all that they portend, increased tremendously.
