A Creative Self-funded residency in rural Dumfriesshire with a variety of accommodations and workspaces. With focus on MERZ philosophy of re-use, re-construction and fabrication.
This Residency is in rural Dumfriesshire on the train line from Glasgow to Carlisle. MERZ has grown across two nearby sites. In addition to MERZ Gallery there’s the Museum of Model Art, ZIPStudio for local and visiting artists, a second small writer’s studio with accommodation (Tadpole), a two bedroom cottage with living room, kitchen and ground floor studio. MERZ has a sculpture green with its short-stay art-houses in the form of Kurt Schwitters and Hannah Hoch. These new living, work and exhibition spaces are in addition to the work-shed and yard around the MERZ gallery and the original Bothy residency building.
The original premises were once a lemonade factory while the Museum repurposed an abandoned abattoir and outbuildings for creative use.
Inspired by Kurt Schwitters MERZ philosophy of reconstruction and fabrication, MERZ provides a selection of living accommodation and workspace to suit various needs. Where required Summerhall TV documents the residencies in film clips for social media, web channels and (sometimes) TV.
