Annie Rapstoff

My work crosses art forms and includes an interest in responses and relationships to place, the environment and what is to be human. Past work has been participatory, collaborative and often process based or ephemeral. Work may take the form of instructions, events, performance for the camera and in situ, gestures, interventions, video and writing/language. I may appear explicitly or anonymously in the work. I have worked with people in a variety of settings, working with artists and non-artists from other professions and experiences. I have recently been investigating urban and rural geology including red sandstone, using the action of mark making, through rubbing and scarifying. I have begun a series of small works exploring surface, decay and imperfection in layers, particularly cracks in pavements continuing an ongoing concerns around fragile surfaces and hidden depths. Funded projects have offered space to manage and complete larger works. I have worked alongside the highways department, musicians, a botanist and poets. A project at The Museum of Domestic Architecture with two other artists included researching the meaning of home. Participants were invited to discuss what the meaning of home was to them and it’s impact on memory, in addition to sharing relationships to chosen household objects.
